Forever Friends
The quality of a nation is reflected in the way it recognizes that its strength lies in its ability to integrate the wisdom of its elders with the spirit and vitality of its children and youth.
~ Margaret Mead Forever Friends was founded in Brookfield Wisconsin by Sherry Power, an educator and nationally recognized leader in intergenerational topics.
The program gives children, young adults and elders a variety of opportunities to form friendships and learn from one another. Activities range from visits to retirement facilities and nursing homes to visits to the classroom and field trips. Young people who may have lost their grandparents or simply recognize the great value to having a special friend are introduced to those who may have lost many friends and family with whom they had shared a long life. The great wisdom of our elders is connected with the energy and wonder of youth. A young person finds a friend who will listen. An elder is renewed by the opportunity to share time that is valued.
The strength of one generation meets the needs of another and the most often segregated members of our community are united. It is an experience of friendship, education, and an appreciation of tradition and values. It is an opportunity to meet a forever friend.
