A World Apart...but Part of the Very Same World!
"We have learned that we cannot be live alone, at peace; that our own well being is dependant on the well-being of other nations, far away...
We have learned to be citizens of the world, members of the human community"
~ Franklin D. Roosevelt Join Free The Children's Leaders Today on a trip of a lifetime! More than anytime in human history, we have become a global community. Between today and the year 2020, the vast majority of new workers, citizens and new consumers -- whose skills and needs will build the world's economy and society -- will come from developing countries.
Over that 12-year period, some 730 million people will join the world's workforce -- more than all the people employed in today's most developed nations in 2000.
More than 90 percent of these new workers will be from developing nations, according to research by Population Action International.Recognizing our undeniable connection to those who live in developing countries has brought to light how much this part of our world suffers. One- half the world's population -- 3 billion people - live on less than $2 a day.
There are 2.2 billion children in the world -- 1.1 billion live in poverty.
According to UNICEF, 30,000 children die every single day due to poverty. " Every year, 11 million children will die quietly, in some of the poorest villages on earth."
Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their name.
20 % of the population of the worlds developed nations consumes 86% of all goods produced in the world.
Over 253 million children -- as young as 5 years old -- work in Child Labor.
Water problems affect half of humanity - 1.1 billion people in developing countries have inadequate access to water, and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. To learn more about the devestating effects of Child Labor...click here. Reaching out in compassion for this suffering, and embracing the reality that our very future depends on the survival and health of our neighbors in developing countries, Dreams for Kids has joined our partner in world change, Free The Children, in sponsoring volunteer overseas trips through Leaders Today that allow our children to become true citizens of the world.
